Well I usually don't do preliminary sketches but I'm not sure what I want to do with the background for the painting I have in mind so this is a "study" of colors for the background. I thought this would be better than to paint the 18"x24" watercolor and not have a plan since watercolors can have a mind of their own when you least expect it! I also find it hard to paint small, so this was also a good chance for me to scale down to 8"x10"ish. . . .
